Let's talk about... Tim Bendzko.

Today I would like to talk about Tim Bendzko and also show you a bit of his music, his style, his life. And of course I won't do it alone because this time I have my small helper - Nina, who likes him and knows about him almost everything. If you want to know something more about her, go to her great blog here.

Tim Bendzko is a German pop singer/songwriter from Berlin.As a young boy he attended a sport gymnasium and played at the first FC Union Berlin football and also later he studied Protestant theology and non-Christian religions.
His musical career began with guitar lessons. When he was 16, he wrote his first songs. He released his debut album "Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären" on June 17 2011 and on May 24 2013 he released his second album "Am seidenen Faden".
He won Bundesvision Song Contest 2011 and  the newcomer Bambi award - both in 2011.
Also Tim was an opening act for Elton John'and for Joe Cocker during their tour in Germany..



It's time for my short interview with my music expert - Nina.

 
Hello Nina. It's really nice to have you as the first music expert on this blog. In one of our

conversations  you recommended me Tim Bendzko and that's the reason, why we are here today - to talk about him and his music. Are you ready?

I listened to his music on YouTube and I must agree with you, he is really good and his music is great. That's funny that I'm impressed by his music because I don't know German, and all his songs are in this language. So what do you think - sounds (only music) are more important than words, languages? Or maybe Tim has something exceptional that I got to like his music?

Firstly - it's amazing to hear that you like some of Tim’s songs. I think it's quite a huge compliment to the artist when people that don't know the musician's language like his sounds anyway. I don't really think that sounds alone are more important or more impressive than the lyrics to the song. It always depends on the song itself, I might say, but the one couldn't exist without the other, I guess. I personally am quite, quite fond of lyrics and the story/meaning behind a song so I'd say the texts are just as important as the music and melody. For me, a song has to tell a story. Something that kinda catches my attention and makes me think about the meaning behind.  So, how comes that you liked some songs by Tim Bendzko though you didn't understand a word?! Maybe it's because you've been able to feel those emotions he puts into his songs anyway by just listening to his voice and the way he sings his songs. Maybe you liked it because the mix of music/melody+lyrics is a good one and the feeling one gets due to music doesn't need a certain language but is just quite.. international.

You, person who love music, good music and who is from Germany, could you say something more about Tim and his music?

So, Tim Bendzko's a German singer & songwriter. He started to write songs at the age of 16 and decided to devote himself completely to the music at one point. He already worked with lots of other artists/songwriter and also performed as the opening act on Elton John's tour in Germany, for example! He won lots of awards yet and once said that "music's the only thing that'll always be there".  I think he’s musician with all of his heart & soul.

I saw that his singles were very popular in Germany [6 singles in Media Control Charts], in Austria [4 singles in Ö3 Austria Top 40] and in Switzerland [3 singles in Swiss Hitparade]. Also he won Bambi award and  Bundesvision Song Contest 2011 and…he was a support before Elton John and Joe Cocker Germans tours, so I think that people like him. Is he some pop-star only for young people or maybe even adults like him?

I guess his music doesn't know any age restrictions. Sure, if you look through the front rows on his concerts you might think there're only teenage girls that love and admire his music, but I personally also know some more "mature" people that like to listen to him. I just think it's a kind of music you can identify with at all ages, no matter if you're 13, 23 or 53. He's just singing about moments and situations we probably all know and experience(d) so his music's for everybody that finds a bit of himself in there!

I think, that it's really hard to choose a good songs to get to know the band or artist. which song by him would be the best to check, is he in our music taste?

I'd probably recommend a song called "Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären", which is definitely my favourite song by him. I can just totally find myself within the lyrics and the story he's trying to tell in there and the acoustic versions of this song are just really great, his voice's just made for this song! I think that's a kinda identification for a good musician: being able to sing your songs acoustic. Just the singer & his voice, maybe a guitar - that's it.

If you had to choose three the best song by him, which one would be and why?

#1: “Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären” (like I already said ;>)

#2: “Ohne zurück zu sehen” - because I like how he's playing with his voice's colours in there, I like the refrain and the lyrics are great. It's one of those songs that just make you want to close your eyes and live/enjoy the moment.

#3: “In dein Herz” - it's quite an emotional song and it's probably one of those you can't listen to in every situation.. but it gets me every time. I'm not very fond of many German artists, but he's one of just a handful that make me feel something. Also, I really love the piano in there!

I checked on YouTube, which song in the most showing and we have the winner  : "Nur Noch Kurz Die Welt Retten" with more than 15.400.000 views. The second place is for "Wenn Worte meine Sprache wären" with more than 10.250.000 views. Third place is for "Ich laufe" with more than 3.900.000 views. There's a huge difference between the first place and the trird. I listened to all of them, and I see that people like song with energy more than a bit slower songs by him, or maybe it's because "Nur noch kurz die Welt retten" is his first single and that's why is more popular? And what do you think about these songs and music videos?

Maybe "Nur noch kurz die Welt retten" has way more views than the others because it was the song that made him popular literally "over night". It's the song you heard on the radio 24/7 at some time and they still play it at least 2 times a day. Maybe it also got more because it's rather a song with a faster rhythm that makes you feel like moving and maybe dancing. Perhaps it's precisely this kind of music that gets most of the people. I quite like all of those three, though I'd put "Nur noch kurz die Welt retten" on #3 in this "ranking". 

My favourite video would probably be the one of "Ich laufe". One might think it's rather boring, but I really like this simplicity. For me it's about the song, I don't really need an extra "film" for the music I like.

Tell us three reasons, why it's worthwhile to check his music and maybe become his fan?

1st - his music is full of... honesty. He puts lots of emotions into his songs, but it never seems to be "too much". He's doing music that's authentic and what's better than being able to identify yourself with sung stories?
2nd - he doesn't only sing about one thing in different ways and sentences. It's not only about the "commonplace topics" like love, sadness, missing, etc. It's quite many-sided, actually!
3rd - his voice is fantastic. It's pure and simple but also melancholic and deep. It's just very enjoyable and also calming to listen to his songs, he's such a talented singer (and a really nice guy, too).

DonkeyBox [interview]

Ladies and Gents,
Today I have something nice for you today - new interview with Atul Rana - founder of the band, vocals and rhythm guitar in DonkeyBox, an English rock band. Some time ago I asked them will they want to be ' an artist of the day' on my blog and will they want to be help me with presentation of their band, and guess what - they were so nice that said 'sure'. Here is a result of our cooperation.


I know that maybe many people asked about it, but I just have to ask one more time - why DonkeyBox? It's a bit, mmm, weird name for the band, especially rock band....

DonkeyBox: It's the one question we get asked the most! At first we did gigs with the name "6am", which sounded cool but lacked that zing. So our drummer of the time then came up with the name of DonkeyBox, it sounded silly, funny and nonsensical, and we've stuck to it since.

DonkeyBox is Atul [founder of the band, vocals and rhythm guitar], Matthew [lead guitar], Greg [drums] and...exactly, who else? As I heard you're looking for a new bass player. 'Disappearing bass player' is it some tradition in the band?

DB: The last bass player Martin moved to New York and the bass player before moved to Amsterdam. It seems like our bass players have a tendency to leave the country! Our current guy Mateusz who came to London from Poland is temporary playing for us and hopefully he will not be going anywhere soon.

If we are talking about the band, could you say something more about you guys?

DB: We are an interesting mix of nationalities united by our love for rock music. Atul was born in India and grew up all over the world, Matthew is English, drummer Greg is half English and half German and grew up in Indonesia, and temporary bassist Mateusz is Polish.

You have very interesting list of your inspirations: Green Day, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Nickelback and...Britney Spears! Why the hell Britney Spears? This is really surprising.

DB: We have a little mischievous and sparky edge to what we do. While it is sinful for rock bands to consider pop artists as inspiration..we actually loved Britney Spears and Lady GaGa so much that we have covered their songs. But please don't tell this secret to our fans, our rock 'n roll reputation will be damaged forever.

So who else is your inspiration?

DB: Besides other bands and musicians, our personal inspiration comes from what we are upto in life and events that move us, be that family, ex-girlfriends, friends and of course some of our closest fans who have been with us through this entire time.

With whom would you like to cooperate in the future(if you had such a possibility)?

DB: It would be awesome to join some of the great US bands like Green Day, The Killers or Metallica one day.

Who in the band is songwriter and composer? Or maybe you are doing it together?

DB: Generally one person has an idea for a musical riff or a song and then we jam with the idea, making the music richer and deeper. We jam and jam until it becomes a song and we record our jams to hear them back for sweet, golden moments. Atul used to write most of the lyrics before, but recently drummer Greg has written lyrics and even guitar riffs for songs. Matthew has written most of the guitar riffs and he has even started writing lyrics to songs. So, it is a combined effort all in all. We are definitely more than the sum of our parts and everyone expresses themselves.

You have one music video Crap Day [*], a few videos from practices and many many vids from your performances. Live videos - is it your way to show the potential of the band?

DB: We don't have many audio recordings so we haven't been able to make many proper music vidoes. We are so addicted to playing live that we have forgotten about the idea of studio recordings, but this is being sorted out now.

At concerts you are singing different things - your songs and songs of other people. What's your favourite cover song? Who is preparing setlists to your gigs?

DB: On occasion we throw in a cover song. Our all time favorite cover is Hit me one more time by Britney Spears, and we also love playing Californication by RHCP. The setlist is generally decided
on the rehearsal before the gig depending on the time available for the gig with a few songs that we could throw in extra if we had time. Atul prints out the setlist and set order.

You have many great songs, with or without lyrics on your page. Are you making plan for some new singles soon?

DB: We are writing about 5 or 6 new songs simultaneously and all to be revealed soon, very very exciting times!

I wanted to ask you about it, but you were faster and before I did it, I read about plans of it on your page. So you'll have your first full album, congrats. Your last CD Backstage Pass [* , *] is from 2007 - it is a long time. Are you excited and are you ready for it, for your baby - new album? I think you are...

DB: Making a new album really is a very special event. We have changed as people so much since 2007. Although we play an awful lot live we have been slow with getting down to a studio and capturing our sound on a record. What will be awesome is having a producer who will help us refine and fine tune our songs so they can be recorded and that way we will have another brain working on our songs.We will be launching the album/EP in September 2013.

Not so long ago you had a performance on the radio [*] and as I can imagine it was a stressing challenge...

DB: It was our first show on the radio and we truly enjoyed it, it was definitely very different to playing a live gig. There was no audience to see you and the sound was crystal clear. Also, there was quite a
bit of running around between the live room and the interview room! It is actually such a cool way to present your music to the world and we are looking to appear on more radio shows. The first time is always the one that sets the path for the rest.

And what now? Do you have some plans for the nearest future? Maybe some tours, music video or new songs?

DB: We will record the new album/EP and two videos to launch it and we will even do a photoshoot to get our publicity material up to date. After that we are looking to do some gigs in different parts of
England first. We are also looking to do Summer festival gigs, which we've never done before. And of course we need to find that full time bass player.

Let's change our conversation a bit. Did you have some crazy, great or sad and bad moments/stories during all these years?

DB: God, there are so many stories in 11 years, where to start? Perhaps the saddest yet most inspirational is when singer Atul's dad died suddenly and he had to go away from London for a few weeks. The band had a gig lined up and DonkeyBox still played that gig despite Atul not being there to sing. The lead guitarist sung the vocals that night and it was a unique, surreal and inspirational gig. And to us that gig symbolised that you must go and do what you love doing the most and that life still goes on despite what it may throw at you.

11 years is such a long time... What are you doing, that you are still DonkeyBox?

DB: You know 11 years later we go to the rehearsal room every week and when we jam, we still get the goosebumps from the amazing creative music we jam with together and the stresses of the day dissapear. The best music is totally organic and unplanned, and that feeling of expressing yourself and losing yourself to the music is addictive. We'll never tire of jamming.

Do you want to say something to your fans or people who just got to know you?

DB: Follow your dreams and passions, life is short and you are never too young or old to start living your dream now.

Artist of the day : Darren Campbell

quick question - do you know Darren Campbell? 
I don't think so because he's not too famous yet (and that's badly but I really hope it'll change soon, very soon) and I'm sure that most of you would say: 'no, I didn't hear about him'. that's why today I would like to present to you young, talented Scottish musician and songwriter as an artist of the day - Ladies and Gents, make some noise for Darren Campbell.

as for me Darren is one of these people who can give something - you know, something special with their music and words. I listened to all his songs and I was (and I still am) between 'wooow' and 'holy crap, that's so great!'. his songs have something what causes that you're impressed because of everything - lyrics and music - and you just must listen to them, from beginning to end.

I know, my opinion isn't everything, and that's why I wrote to Darren with a few questions about him, his music and his plans for the future...and two days later I got reply from Darren - woow!

could you say a few words about yourself?
Darren: I'm Darren and I am a part time singer songwriter from Scotland, looking to make it fulltime.

why did you become a musician?
D: Simply because I love palying and sharing my music with people.

how would you describe your music style?
D:  Pop/Acoustic/rock

do you have music idols? do you want to be like them?
D: There is nobody I wasn to be like musically, i feel i have a unique sound. But I love loads of artists and bands such as Ben Howard, Lewis Watson and The Dangerous Summer.

from where are you getting idea/inspiration for new songs?
 D: This is a hard one, my songs and ideas just sort of come to me when I am palying guitar. Very rarely do I sit down and write on a speicific subject intentionally.

your songs are for... exactly, for whom?
D: That would be telling!! But everyone will interperet my songs in their own way.

I listened to your songs and I think they're really cool and positive. are you going to write/record songs in such a style?
D: Yes I am keeping to this style, and thank you!

what would you say about your debut EP 'Days to come'*?
D: Its a 4 track EP with four catchy style songs. Track1,3 and 4 are a similair poppy style but I feel track 2 "Better Things" is more rocky/pop punk.

why is it worthwhile to listen to your music?
D: This is a hard one to answer, I feel my music can be enjoyed by most people. I have fans that listen to metal and hardcore for example.

when will it be possible to listen to your new songs?
D: I have a new single "Growing Apart," which will hopefully be released in the next week or so. Its going to have a music video too!

what with your next EP or album - are you planning recording something like that?
D: I am focussing on singles for the next year so haven't thought about another EP , but there will be plenty of new songs.

with whom would you like to cooperate in the future(if you had such a possibility)?
D: I'm not too sure, I am trying to focus on writing my own songs at the moment but in the future it would be great to collaborate with some femaile vocalists.

do you have some tour in your plans?
D: At the moment I am planning on getting my name out in Scotland then hopefully paly over the rest of the UK.

and what now? do you have some plans for the nearest future?
D: Right now I am preparing to release my new song "Growing Apart," and I am the starting the video to the single that will be released after that!

do you want to say something to your fans or people who just got to know you?
D: Yes! Thank you so much for the support and please share my music with your friends! I appreciate it :)

as you see he's very talented singer and songwriter, who will give us a lot of wonderful songs - I'm sure of it. why? oh, please... cool songs, awesome music, amazing lyrics, great vocal - everything what you need to happiness. and that's why I think he still still surprise us: with new songs, with new dose of energy. personally, I can't wait to listen to his new sounds soon.

 I just fell in love with his music, to be honest :)

Jacopo Massa : Inno 2012 [FC ProVercelli]

today, once again this week, I have a surprise for you - an interview with Jacopo Masssa, Italian musician, about who you could read several times on my blog.
this time, I asked him about his the last project, very special project, to be honest. maybe you didn't know it, but he recorded new anthem for football club, FC ProVercelli, and this is the reason of this post, because I think this is interesting.

so a few days ago I sent him a few questions about that project, and yesterday I got reply from him, so enjoy his words and music of course too.

mmm, I think, I should do something before that - tell you something more about FC ProVercelli, because you can't know this club.

Pro Vercelli, [Football Club Pro Vercelli 1892] is an Italian association football club based in Vercelli, Piedmont and is the oldest sport club of Italy and it made history of Italian football. The team currently plays in Serie B. The club has won 7 Italian Football Championship and the all-time best striker, Silvio Piola. After 64 years FC Pro Vercelli 1892 is going to play again among the big teams of Serie B and celebrating the 120th Anniversary between history and legend.

why you wrote the new song, Inno 2012, for this football club?
Jacopo Massa: Because I wanted to hear at the stadium of my hometown's glorious football club a new powerful hymn written and composed by me. You know, it's such an honour and a pleasure when you finally make it. And then you appear on Wikipedia ahahah.

how long did you work above this project?
JM: The idea came up during the last year and the project is still going on with a 7 tracks EP that is going to be shown at the city theatre with the support of a ballet. The album will be released in an exclusive limited edition package and also on iTunes.

who was first with this idea - you or maybe the club?
JM: I decided everything since the first moment and the club was just glad and trusted in me.

from where you took idea/inspiration for this song?
JM: Music and Football are universal languages and they share almost the same vibrations to the fans and the supporters. I mean that a match of your team or a concert of your band are something more similar than you think. This is the first reason that inspired me a lot. I wanted to unite both of those things in order do something unique in a pop song easy to be played in any event and sung by anyone. Indeed a special feature of the track are the voices recorded at the stadium.

are you a fan of this team? only be honest.
JM: Sure! I am fan because I love my city and I often wear white clothes as well for this reason.

who is the most proud of the result of your work - you, your family, fans of Pro Vercelli? or maybe somebody else?
JM: Of course me and my family are really delighted but the best satisfaction was when people of every age appreciated it immediately. That was my target. It's been an unusual experience, I could say alternative and traditional at the same time and therefore it was so riskfull. Eventually I performed before the match and the team won in a hard moment.

and what now? do you have some plans for the nearest future? when will it be possible to listen to your new songs? 
JM: Well, just have a little patience and stay tuned on my social networks for all my next unexpected projects!

'The seed and the sewage' by Rhyme

hello, hello!

today I have a surprise for you and not only for their fans - a small interview with Gabriele Gozzi and Riccardo Canato, from the great Italian rock band Rhyme.

you could read about them in earlier posts, about them and their album 'fi(R)st' but today...will be better - believe me.

I sent them a few questions about their new album The seed and the sewage (premiere: December 2012), their plans for the future and about band and a few days later I got reply from them - woow!

let's see what they said...

how would you describe your new album The seed and the sewage?

Gab: rough, real, deeply straight to the point
Rik: tough, unbreakable, madly in anger, sociopolitical and pure.

how do you think, is your new album is better or the same as your album fi(R)st?

Gab: I think it doesn't have to be a matter of "being worse or better". It's different. It is an evolution of our sound for sure. I personally feel more involved, because I was there from the beginning of the process this time. My anger is in there, thus my hope. We almost couldn't control our creative process and the result surprised us first!
Rik: I think it's better, I'm honest. This is an album band, even if me and Teo wrote most of the album, all the arrangements, the sound, the philosophy behind the TSATS, come from a band. We're friends, now, we're partners in music. You feel the smell of rehearsals, tours, life on the road. It's even better for another reason: no fuckin' traces of old hard rock.

do you have favourite song on this album?

Gab: I think Victim Of Downturn is the most complete song we've ever written. It's what Rhyme can accomplish, putting their "everything" on the line.
Rik: Victim of Downturn, with no doubt. Lyrics, music and performance. In my opinion, the essence of TSATS.

how long did you work above this project?

Gab: It took almost a year, we had more time,we did lots of pre productions, eventhough we learned that, as musicians who embrace the "do it yourself" philosophy, there's always a sense of urgence in the air.

from where you took idea/inspiration for new songs and album?

Rik: Most of the lyrics of TSATS are facing the economic crisis started in USA in 2008. We're dealing with politicians, lawyers, media and at the same time with the opposite side, poor people, suicides, forbidden families, disoccupation, desperation. FI(R)ST was something personal, musically and lyrically. This one gives a portrait of nowadays world, fear and anger definitely took their tool on us a little bit.

is there something on this album, what will surprise your fans? maybe something special?

Gab: I think that the album itself could be a surprise, expecially if you know us from the beginning.
The best of us is musically and lyrically in this album. I don't expect it to be an easily understood. If you're a new listener, I hope you'll take the time to scratch the surface a bit, and dive into our music.

did you have some crazy moments/stories during the work on the album?

Gab: The drums session were kinda crazy: only four days to set and record everything. Teo went sick and spent almost the entire day 2 in and out of the hospital;on day 3, we managed to play a show after a 14 hr studio session!! crazy!! I managed to almost break a finger while moving a dishwasher! Whaddahell haha!

what with promotion of this album? do you have some tour in your plans?

Gab: Our new label, Bakerteam\Scarlet Records is doing a good job. The album will be distributed almost worldwide.
As for our tour plans, we are working on multiple options: Russia, USA, Northern Europe, Italy, and of course....we want to come back to your wonderful Poland. We'll see what are able to collect. 2013 should be an interesting year!

how it happened, that you met and you formed such a brilliant band?

Rik: well, thanks. You know, you have to work your ass off to get what you want. I started my music life at 15, with other bands, other musicians...but what I really wanted was Rhyme. I met Teo in 2002 and we played together, then the band splited, but we kept in touch. When the time was right I made the call. I knew he was the right one and the same happened with Gab. It was February 2010, we were exited for our first anniversary as Rhyme when, 3 days before this big show, the previous singer left the band with a sms on my phone. We get depressed, really, but I told Teo: "we're gonna have this guys, Gab, with us...sooner than you think. I promise." 10 days later Gab joined the band. He was busy, but he fucked up all his projects for us. I ain't gonna forget this for a long time. About Vinny, you know...he was the missing part. I made another call and we spent like two hours talking about "how beautiful that album is...I love that drummer style so much...", kinda like I was talking to myself. He's a great drummer and a great guy. We're lucky to stay together, the four of us.

to be honest, I can't wait to buy this album, to listen to it and enjoy their work, because I know it'll be worth it. why? because I listened fi(R)st and I don't regret it because it's a really great album and I know they're creating only awesome songs, not commercial shit. and of course I hope I'll see them on live soon -  for sure.
